An Integrated Modeling System for the Evaluation of Water Resources in Coastal Agricultural Watersheds: Application in Almyros Basin, Thessaly, Greece

This study presents an integrated modeling system for the evaluation of quantity and quality water resources coastal agricultural watersheds. The consists coupled interrelated models, including (i) a surface hydrology model (UTHBAL), (ii) groundwater (MODFLOW), (iii) crop growth/nitrate leaching (REPIC, R-ArcGIS-based EPIC model), (iv) contaminant transport (MT3DMS), (v) seawater intrusion (SEAWAT). efficacy to simulate has been applied Almyros basin in Thessaly, Greece. It is with irrigated intensified agriculture facing serious problems, such as depletion, nitrate pollution, intrusion. Irrigation demands were estimated main crops cultivated area, based on precipitation temperature from regional weather stations. models have calibrated validated against time-series observed yields, table observations, concentrations nitrates chlorides. results indicate that simulates increased accuracy. proposed could be used tool simulation management climate change scenarios.
